Etruscan Cortona: archeological itinerary
Areas of archaeological interest which are open to visitors:
- The Meloni (Etruscan tombs) from the VI cent. B.C., located in Sodo, are two burial sites characterized by massive stone walls, vestibules, and chambers. In the second tomb (Melone II), a terraced altar, decorated with impressive stone sculptures.
- Melone of Camucia, from the VII cent. B.C.: a large tomb with two main chambers, entrances, atrium, and corridors, located in the close town of Camucia.
- Tanella di Pitagora from the third century B.C.: a marvellous tomb of the Hellenistic era, and - by legend - the burial site of Pythagoras.
- Porta Bifora, IV-III cent. B.C.: an impressive "two-opening" Etruscan gate, located at the lower perimetre of the town walls.
