Approximate Commutative Algebra: what does it mean?
Lorenzo Robbiano (Università di Genova) Already a few centuries ago scientists were using algebra to "rationalize" experimental data. Nowadays we want to reconsider that classical attitude, using modern tools from commutative algebra, computer algebra, and algebraic geometry. We named this topic "Approximate Commutative Algebra". Is it old matter or an emerging new subject? How do we combine the rigour and exactitude of algebra with the uncertainties of approximation? To shed some lights on these questions, we will wander along a path where we encounter physical laws, mysteries of the subsoil, shapes of solar flares and spinal bones. | ![]() |
