                            (First Announcement)

Papers presenting original research on aspects of Algorithmic Number

aspects of the following topics would be among those considered
appropriate:

Elementary Number Theory (e.g. Primality Testing, Factoring, Polynomials)

Algebraic Geometry (e.g. Elliptic Curves, Abelian Varieties)

Geometry of Numbers (e.g. Lattice Reduction)

Analytic Number Theory (e.g. zeta-functions, distribution of primes)

Algebraic Number Theory (e.g. Cyclotomic fields, Class numbers)

Computational Complexity (e.g. NP completness, Reductions)

Applications (e.g. Coding theory, Cryptography, Program-checking)

Abstract Submission: Authors are requested to send 10 copies
(double-sided printing is preferred) of an extended abstract to:

                        H. Cohen

Submitted abstracts should contain each author's name, affiliation and
email address. Abstracts should not exceed 10 pages in length
(excluding bibliography).

Authors of accepted abstracts will be expected to present
their results at the symposium and must submit a camera-ready

We are negotiating with Springer-Verlag for publication of the
proceedings in its Lecture Notes in Computer Science series. A version
of the proceedings will be available at the symposium.

Researchers interested in a short presentation at the conference may
submit 10 copies of a one page abstract for consideration. Accepted
abstracts for short presentations will be included in the proceedings
at the option of the authors.

TRAVELING TO BORDEAUX

available. If you are in one of the 5 hotels above, ask the shuttle driver to

BY TRAIN:
A very fast (300Km/h) TGV train is available from Paris about once every
90 minutes, the trip taking between 2h58 mn for the fastest, to 3h40 for the
slowest.

REGISTRATION:

Your prompt reply is appreciated and will facilitate conference
organization. A limited number of conference registrations will be
available at the conference. A registration desk will be open at
the welcoming buffet on Saturday evening May 18, 1996 from 17:00 to 22:00,
and then outside the conference room beginning May 19, 1996. If you arrive
earlier, for example on May 17, 1996, it will be possible to register with
the A2X secretary (Veronique St-Martin), in the Mathematics building of
the University.

INFORMATION ABOUT TRAVELING INSIDE BORDEAUX:

You may of course take taxis, which are rather expensive. We explain here how to
use the bus system.

You must first buy a "carnet" (10 tickets) in any tobacconist or newspaper agent.
Although tickets can be bought on the buses, they cost much more and cannot be used
if you change buses, which you will have to do, while tickets in a carnet can be
used on several buses as long as your trip does not exceed 1 hour.

Apart from the train station, there are two important bus "hubs" in Bordeaux:
the "Place de la Victoire", and the "Place Gambetta". Although not too far one from
the other (around 20 minutes walk), it is suggested to go from one to the other
by using the bus number 7 or 8, which run very frequently. In addition, these buses
also go to the train station.

Place Gambetta is near all the recommended hotels (2 minutes walk).

Place de la Victoire is the place where you must take the only bus going to
the conference, the bus F.

Therefore, a standard algorithm for going from the hotel to the welcoming buffet
is to take the 7-8 place Gambetta to the Place de la Victoire, find the bus F stop
in the right direction (!!!), towards campus.

1) The welcoming buffet/registration is at: Restaurant La Passerelle, restaurant
universitaire #2, avenue Jean Babin, Domaine Universitaire, Talence; this is 200m.
from the conference rooms.

If you come by train (Gare Saint-Jean in Bordeaux), you can either:

Take a taxi: around 80 FF plus tip.

Take the bus: First buy a "carnet" (i.e. 10 tickets) of bus tickets in any
tobacconist or newspaper agent (buying the ticket on the bus costs
MUCH more, and the latter ticket cannot be used when you change buses).
Then take the bus number 7 or 8 until "place de la Victoire", then
the bus F. Get off at "Stadium Universitaire", walk 50 m. in the same
direction as the bus, turn left on Avenue Pey-Berland, then turn right
        on Avenue Jean Babin until the restaurant (around 500 m. in all);
A single ticket is enough IF you buy it outside the bus.
The F bus leaves every quarter of an hour until 7PM, and every half hour
        afterwards, until 10PM.

You may certainly prefer to go first to your hotel before going to the buffet.
In that case, from the train station either take a taxi to your hotel
(around 50FF plus tip), or bus number 7 or 8 until "Place Gambetta".
All the recommended hotels are very close to this "Place".
To go to the buffet from your hotel, the same algorithm is valid
as if you came directly from the train station.

If you come by plane (Bordeaux-Merignac aiport), you can either:

Take a taxi: around 200 FF.

Take the airport shuttle: get off at "place Gambetta", and go to your hotel
which is at 2 minutes walk if you are in one of the recommended ones.
To go to the welcoming buffet, either take a taxi (around 80 FF plus tip)
or take the bus by following the algorithm above.

If you come by car, take the freeway around Bordeaux and get off at the exit
"Talence-Domaine Universitaire"; follow the signs "Domaine Universitaire"
on the Cours de la Liberation; turn left on the avenue Pey-Berland,
then turn left on avenue Jean Babin; at 50 metres from the crossing, you
are at the restaurant la Passerelle.

2) At the end of the buffet on Saturday evening, we will try to drive the
participants back to their hotels. However, buses run until 12pm on Saturday.

3) The talks will take place in the "grand amphitheatre de l'Ecole
Nationale Superieure de Chimie-Physique de Bordeaux (E.N.S.C.P.B.)",
at the corner of the avenue Pey-Berland and the avenue des Facultes,
Campus Universitaire, Talence (at 200 m. from the restaurant where the
welcoming buffet takes place).

To reach it from your hotel, take the bus: place Gambetta, number 7 or 8
until place de la Victoire, then bus F; get off at "Stadium Universitaire",
walk 50 m. in the same direction as the bus, turn left on Avenue Pey-Berland,
then left on Avenue des Facultes; the "Ecole" is at the corner of these two
streets. Note that on Sundays, there is only one F bus every half hour
(on weekdays, every 12 minutes).

4) Lunch on Sunday will be at the restaurant La Passerelle
(same place as the welcoming buffet) for a price of 120 FF; lunch on
Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday will be at the "restaurant universitaire #2"
(same place) for 50 FF (including wine and coffee). The reason for the high price
on Sunday is that the restaurant, which is quite a good quality restaurant,
will open specially for us (Sunday, May 19th is in the long Ascension Week-end
in France); It is not easy to find a restaurant open on Sunday at less than
2 km from the conference. Hence, we will assume that you are willing to pay
