The van der Waals forces are attractive forces between neutral atoms
or molecules. They play important role in Biology Chemistry and Physics.
The van der Waals law states that at large distances these attractive
forces correspond to an interaction energy that decays as the inverse
6th power of the distance between atomic nuclei. Despite important
progress that has been made towards the rigorous justification of
this law a complete proof is still lacking. Our goal is to show, under
some assumptions, the van der Waals law and provide leading term of the
interaction energy for systems of neutral atoms. This is a joint work with I.M. Sigal.
